Do We Need Religion in 21st Century?
Few people have been asked me why do we need a religion anyway? Common sense could tell us right from the wrong, why do we need a religion?
In the beginning let me tell you that I am not a scholar or a wise man, my response may not satisfy you, but that is what I think of this question. Who says that our common sense is good enough to tell us what is right if we don’t have a knowledge. It was the religion centuries ago that told us what is right and what is wrong. Because right and wrong is subjective terminologies, if I think of something as right, not necessarily others also think the same. It was the religion that taught us lying, cheating, violence and etc are wrong, humans didn’t know that back then. These values are now embedded deeply into our societies and we taught by our parents, teachers or guardians that stealing is wrong, injustice is wrong and insulating others is wrong. It was the religion that taught us these values and moralities, and now everyone accepts these values and teaches to their children. Since the childhood we have been taught these values, and that is why now we think it’s a common sense, but the reality is different. If it wasn’t for religion, we would’ve been living in a chaotic world.
Not satisfied yet? Let me give you an example. Do you know Psychology is a common sense? Most of the people will agree that 80-90% of Psychological studies are seem to be a common sense. Such as, one of their studies show that three brake/tail lights in a vehicle is more efficient than two and it will cause less accidents, that is the reason why most of the vehicles around the world now have three lights instead of two. Don’t you think it is a common sense? Why do we need Psychology to tell us what is obvious? The answer is, it is now appearing as obvious to us, but it wasn’t very obvious when they were doing the studies. If there wasn't any Psychological Studies, we never have known to have three brake/tail lights.
Yes, we did need a religion to civilize us and tell us the right from wrong, we do need a religion today, and we will need a religion in future. All human beings can have different perspective on a issue, and that is when religion comes in to tell us what is absolute right. Otherwise we all will be fighting on a same issue for centuries and wouldn’t decide anything. So, next time when you think we don’t need a religion, please think again.
